November 8-10 2019, students from the Philippine Model United Nations
Community held the first ever Cavite Model United Nations in Sir Raymiel
Academy. Model United Nations (MUN) is an academic simulation of the United
Nations where delegates of each country work together to solve agendas
through discussing resolutions to specific problems in the various
committees of the United Nations, whilst conforming to the foreign
policies of their respective countries. Model UN serves as a method
through which students may learn about diplomacy, politics, economics,
and international relations, along with the application of practical
skills such as public speaking, research, writing, and negotiation.
Some
of the topics discussed consisted of: protection of commercial vessels
in international waters, human rights in post-war areas, promoting green
growth amid rapid urbanization, and the modernization of agricultural
systems in developing countries, to name a few.
There
are already several Model UN conferences held annually in different
universities and venues all over the Philippines, organized by student
and youth organizations in institutions such as the Ateneo, University
of the Philippines, UST, UP, DLSU, FEU, University of San Agustin, and
University of St. La Salle, to name a few.
According
to CAVMUN Secretary General Jhea Angel Delgade: “Our goal is to make
these academic simulations accessible for everyone; including students
in public schools as these conferences help the delegates engage in
substantive political discussions, improve their public speaking skills,
and mold them to become critical thinkers.”
Atty. Chel Diokno served as the guest speaker for the first CAVMUN.
